A taxonomic study of the genus Lycoris ( Amaryllidaceae ) based on morphological characters
Kyoung Hwan Tae, Sung Chul Ko
Abstract
Morphological characters of the genus Lycoris were reexamined, and a key based on these characters was provided. Morphological characters such as bulb, propagation pattern, perianth arrangment, perianth margin, pedicel, peduncle, leaf, and fruit were thought to be useful for elucidating the relationships and phylogeny in the genus Lycoris. Among the taxa examined, L. radiata shows the most advanced and independent characteristics in propagation pattern, perianth arrangement, perianth condition, pedicel shape, leaf midrib condition, leaf growing period, and fertility. Based on bulb shape, perianth arrangement, perianth margin, pedicel, leaf growing period, and fertility, three taxa including L. sanguinea var. sanguinea, L. sanguinea var. koreana, and L. sanguinea var. kiushiana were primitive, and they are very closely related to the ancestor of the genus. Based on morphology of perianth margin, six taxa excluding the three taxa mentioned above, are divided into two groups, the first group of L. squamigera, L. chejuensis, and L. flavescens, and the second group of L. chinensis var. sinuolata, L. albiflora, and L. aurea.
