Abstract
Morphological characters of 20 Korean taxa of two subgenera (Pycreus, Cyperus) and four sections (Juncellus, Difformis, Iriae, Cyperus) of Cyperus (Cyperaceae) were reexamined. The epidermal patterns of achene was investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a light microscope (LM). Morphological characters (length and width of bract, spikelet, scale, achene and shape of inflorescence, spikelet, scale, apex of scale, achene and number of bract, stigma) and epidermal patterns of achene were useful for the identification and classification of the taxa. C. orthostachyus (A), C. orthostachyus (B) and C. orthostachyus (C) were newly found in Korea, while the taxonomic positions and Korean names of C. serotinus Rottb., C. globosus All., C. polystachyos Rottb., C. nipponicus Fr. & Sav., C. sanguinolentus Vah1., C. cyperoides (L.) O. Kuntze., C. difformis L., C. glomeratus L., C. michelianus Link. subsp. pacificus (Ohwi) T. Koyama., C. exaltatus Retz. var. iwasakii, C. iria L., C. amuricus Maxim., C. microiria Steud., C. rotundus L., C. haspan L., C. hakonensis Fr. & Sav., C. tenuispica Steud. were clarified. C. rotundus was similar to C. haspan in shape of inflorescence, spikelet, scale, apex of scale, achene and number of stigma. C. rotundus and C. haspan, however, were distinct from each other regarding length of inflorescence, number of bract. On the other hand, C, microiria was similar to either C. iria or C. amuricus in morphological characters (spikelet, number of stigma). C. microiria was difficult, however, to be judged because number of bract, shape of achene, apex of scale and epidermal patterns of achene were distinct from other Cyperus taxa in Korea. The scientific and Korean names were reviewed and a key based on these characters was provided.
