Patterns of morphological variation in Fallopia sect. Fallopia are examined using numerical analysis, and the delimitation of the taxa in the section is evaluated. Principal components analysis of individuals of the six taxa in the section using 20 morphological characters revealed the presence of five major groups in the section; these include F. convolvulus, F. scandens, F. cristata, F. dumetorum, and a group consisting of F. dentatoalata and F. pterocarpa individuals. In considering the patterns of morphological variation of the major morphological characters, it is strongly suggested that F. scandens, F. dentatoalata, F. pterocarpa, F. dumetorum and F. convolvulus should be recognized as distinct species, but F. cristata should be treated as a variety of F. scandens. |
