ABSTRACT
Fruit surface morphology of eight Korean species (14 taxa) of Scutellaria was investigated using a scanning electron microscope. Scutellaria baicalensis is quite distinct from other species in having baculate apical evaginations and indistinct boundary between papillae as well as between surface cells. Other species are divided into two groups; one with evaginations (S. dependens, S. indica, S. insignis, and S. regeliana), and the other without evaginations (S. pekinensis, S. moniliorhiza, and S. strigillosa). Further classification was possible based on the shape of papilla, evagination, surface cell, fruit size, etc. A fruit key to the species and the descriptions were provided. Taxonomic relationships among problematic taxa were discussed.
