ABSTRACT
Morphological characters of 16 Korean taxa of two subgenus (Scirpus, Isolepis) five sections (Bolboschoenus, Scirpus, Trichophorum, Schoenoplectus, Adaeogeton) of the genus Scirpus (Cyperaceae) were reexamined. The epidermal patterns of achene and leaf were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a light microscope (LM). Morphological characters (length and width of stem, leaf, leaf sheath, spikelet, achene, scale and bract, and shape of cross-sectioned stem, spikelet, achene, apex of scale, and number of bract) and epidermal patterns of achene and leaf (shape of achene, fundamental cell, wavy of cell wall, silica body, size and frequency of stomatal complex and shape of subsidiary cell) were useful for identification and classification of the taxa. Scirpus sp. were newly found in Korea, while the taxonomic positions and Korean names of S. fluviatilis (Torr.) A. Gray, S. maritimus L., S. planiculmis Schmidt., S. karuizawensis Makino, S. mitsukurianus Makino, S. wichurae Boecklr var. asiaticus (Beetle) T. Koyama were clarified. S. fluviatilis was similar to S, maritimus in length of stem, cross-section, apex of scale. S. fluviatilis and S. maritimus, however, were distinct from each other regarding shape of achene, cross-section of achene, shape of spidelet, shape of subsidal cell and cross section of stem. On the other hand, Scirpus sp. was similar to either S. juncoides or S. wallichii in morphological characters (scale, achene), but should be treated as a new species, Because number of stigma, shape of spikelet, shape of achene, apex of scale, epidermal patterns in the stem and achene, shape of stomatal complex, and number of stomatal complex were distinct from other Scirpus taxa in Korea. The scientific and Korean names were reviewed and a key based on these characters was provided.
