Abstract
Iris, series Chinensis, endemic to Far Eastern Asia (Korea, China, and Japan), is distinguished from related series by the morphological characters such as size of plant, floral axis, perianth, and seed. Six taxa such as I. minutoaurea, I. koreana, I. cdaesanensis, I. rossii, I. rossii for. alba, and I. rossii var. latifolia are distributed in Korea. Korean species of series Chinensis are in need of investigations even though there have been many controversals on the taxonomic identities and status of rank. In the present study, we performed the RAPD analysis to delimit the taxa and to investigate the genetic relationships with 16 populations of series Chinensis including outgroups. Eighty four storable RAPD markers were found from the PCR reactions with 13 random oligoprimers and were analyzed by Nei-Li`s genetic coefficient. From 5.5 to 21.8 percent of genetic variations were showed among the species of series Chinensis. Two major groups (I. rossii and I. minutoaurea complex) were clustered from the phenogram of UPGMA analysis. From the NJ tree, series Chinensis was grouped distinctly from the outgroups, and I. koreana and I. odaesanensis were diverged from I. minutoaurea. Also, I. rossii was the sister group of I. minutoaurea complex. RAPD analysis was very useful to resolve the taxonomic problems, to delimit the taxa and to discuss the taxonomic relationships among the species of Iris series Chinensis.
